So, you’ve got a WordPress website, nice! But before you sit back and wait for the magic to happen (spoiler: it won’t without a little effort), let’s make sure your site has the essentials. Here are six absolute must-haves for a small business website that actually works for you.

1. A Clean, On-Brand Design

First impressions matter, and your website is often the first thing potential customers see. Keep it clean, professional, and aligned with your brand. If visitors land on your site and it looks like a DIY project from 2009, they’ll bounce faster than you can say “bad user experience.”

2. Mobile-Friendly Everything

If your website isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re basically telling half your audience, “Nah, I don’t really need your business.” With most people browsing on their phones, your site needs to look good and function smoothly on all screen sizes.

3. SEO That Works for You

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) isn’t just a fancy marketing buzzword, it’s how people actually find your business online. Your site needs the basics: proper keyword use, fast loading speeds, and solid meta descriptions. Otherwise, Google will treat you like that one sock lost in the laundry.

4. Clear Calls to Action (CTAs)

Your website isn’t just a digital brochure, it should guide visitors toward taking action. Want them to book a call? Buy a product? Join your email list? Make sure your CTAs are clear, compelling, and easy to find. No one should have to play detective to figure out what to do next.

5. Strong Security (SSL Certificate Included!)

A secure site is a must, both for visitor trust and for Google rankings. That little padlock in the browser bar (aka SSL certificate) tells people your site is safe. Without it, visitors (and Google) might assume your site is sketchy and move along.

6. Fast Load Speeds

Nobody has time for a slow website. If your site takes forever to load, visitors will bounce before they even see what you have to offer. Compress images, use caching, and get good hosting to keep things speedy.

Final Thoughts

Your WordPress site should work for your business, not against it. If you’re missing any of these must-haves, it might be time for a little website glow-up. Need help? You know where to find me.

What’s your biggest website struggle? Send me a message—I’m always happy to chat!

If you’ve ever worked with a web designer, you might have noticed a little link in the footer that says something like, Website by [Designer Name]. It’s a common practice, one that many designers use to showcase their work and attract new clients. But here’s the thing: I don’t do it.

Yep, that’s right. I don’t slap my name on the websites I design. Not because I don’t love my work (I do!), and not because I don’t want more business (I do!). But because your website should be all about YOU.

Keeping the Focus on Your Brand

Your website is a reflection of your business, your brand, and your expertise, not mine. When potential customers land on your site, the last thing they need is a distraction that takes them somewhere else. That footer link? It’s a tiny invitation to click away from your business. And that’s the last thing I want for you.

Instead, I believe in designing websites that are completely focused on your brand, making sure every element, right down to the footer, keeps visitors engaged with your business.

How I Get New Clients (Hint: It’s Not Footer Links)

I’m a firm believer that the best kind of marketing is word-of-mouth. Instead of relying on a tiny footer link, I trust in happy clients, glowing reviews, and social media shout-outs to spread the word. If you love your website (which I hope you do!), a simple recommendation goes a long way.

Want to give me a little love? Here’s how you can help:

Share your experience on social media – A quick shout-out on Instagram, LinkedIn, or Facebook is way more powerful than a footer link.

Leave a review – Whether it’s on Google, your favorite business directory, or even a testimonial I can showcase, your words mean the world.

Include me in a resource page – If you have a ‘Partners’ or ‘Resources’ section on your site, I’d be honored to be listed there.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, my goal is to build websites that work for you, not to use your site as a billboard for my business. I’d rather earn new clients through genuine referrals and shared success than a tiny footer link that takes visitors away from your brand.

So if you’re wondering why my name isn’t hiding at the bottom of your site, now you know, it’s because your website should be all about YOU. And if you love what I created for you, I’d be forever grateful for a shout-out, a tag, or a kind word to a fellow business owner looking for a designer.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is kind of like dating do it right, and Google will love you. Do it wrong, and you’ll be ghosted to page 10 where no one will ever find you. Yikes.

But don’t worry! I’m here to help you avoid the most common SEO mistakes so your website can actually show up, get clicks, and bring in customers. Let’s dive in.

1. Ignoring Keywords, or Using the Wrong Ones

The mistake: Either not using keywords at all (cue the sound of Google passing you by) or stuffing your content with so many keywords that it reads like a robot wrote it.

How to fix it: Do some keyword research to find what your audience is actually searching for (Google Keyword Planner and Ubersuggest are your friends). Use keywords naturally… like you’re talking to a real human, not trying to summon the SEO gods.

2. Neglecting Mobile Optimization

The mistake: Your website looks great on desktop but is a hot mess on mobile. Fun fact: over 60% of searches happen on mobile, so if your site isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re losing potential customers fast.

How to fix it: Use a responsive design (or work with a web designer who gets it!). Test your site on different devices and make sure it loads quickly, nobody has time for a slow website.

3. Slow Site Speed (Aka The Patience Killer)

The mistake: Your website loads slower than a dial-up connection from 1999. Google hates slow sites, and so do your visitors.

How to fix it: Compress images, minimize unnecessary plugins, and use a good hosting provider. Test your speed with Google’s PageSpeed Insights to see where you can improve.

4. Skipping Meta Descriptions & Title Tags

The mistake: Your pages are floating around the internet with no clear description, making it harder for Google (and humans) to know what your content is about.

How to fix it: Write compelling meta descriptions and title tags for each page, think of them as mini ads for your content. Keep them concise, engaging, and keyword-rich.

5. Not Having Enough Quality Content

The mistake: Thinking you can slap up a basic website and call it a day. SEO loves fresh, valuable content (and no, that one blog post from 2018 doesn’t count).

How to fix it: Create high-quality content that actually helps your audience. Blog posts, FAQs, case studies… anything that adds value and keeps people on your site longer.

6. Forgetting Internal & External Links

The mistake: Not linking between pages on your own website (internal linking) or to reputable sources (external linking). This makes your site harder to navigate and less credible to Google.

How to fix it: Use internal links to guide visitors to relevant pages on your site. Link out to high-quality sources to show Google you know your stuff.

7. Ignoring Analytics (Flying Blind = Bad Idea)

The mistake: Not tracking your SEO efforts, so you have no clue what’s working (or what’s not).

How to fix it: Set up Google Analytics and Google Search Console to track your traffic, keywords, and rankings. Data is your best friend, so use it to make smarter SEO decisions.

Final Thoughts

SEO isn’t some mystical, impossible-to-understand magic, it’s just about making your website easy for Google and your audience to love. Avoid these mistakes, stay consistent, and you’ll start seeing results.

Need help getting your SEO on track? Let’s chat! I’ll make sure your site isn’t stuck in search engine no-man’s land!

So, you’re ready to build your website (yay, go you!), but now you’re stuck on the million-dollar question: WordPress or Shopify? Both are powerhouse platforms, but they’re designed for very different needs. Picking the right one is like choosing between coffee and tea, both great, but one definitely fits your vibe better. Let’s break it down.

WordPress: The Customizable Powerhouse

WordPress is the Swiss Army knife of website platforms. It’s flexible, endlessly customizable, and perfect for businesses that need more than just an online store.

Best for:

✅ Service-based businesses (coaches, designers, photographers, etc.)
✅ Bloggers & content-heavy sites
✅ Businesses needing total design & functionality freedom
✅ SEO fanatics who want to rank like a boss

Pros:

✔ Full design freedom, make your site look exactly how you want
✔ Tons of plugins (seriously, over 50,000) to add all the functionality you need
✔ Perfect for content-driven websites
✔ More control over SEO (hello, Google rankings!)

Cons:

❌ Slight learning curve, WordPress isn’t hard, but it takes some setup
❌ Requires maintenance (updates, security, backups.. don’t worry, there are plugins for that!)

Shopify: The E-Commerce Dream

If selling products is your main focus, Shopify is your best friend. It’s designed specifically for online stores, making it a seamless experience for both you and your customers.

Best for:

✅ Product-based businesses (physical or digital products)
✅ Entrepreneurs who want a ready-to-go store with minimal setup
✅ Businesses that don’t want to deal with tech headaches
✅ Anyone who wants built-in payment processing

Pros:

✔ Super user-friendly, no tech skills needed
✔ Secure, reliable, and fully hosted (aka no maintenance for you)
✔ Optimized for e-commerce with built-in sales tools
✔ Handles payments, shipping, and inventory management seamlessly

Cons:

❌ Limited customization compared to WordPress
❌ Monthly fees (starting at $39/month)
❌ Not ideal for content-heavy sites

So, Which One is Right for You?

If you’re selling products and want an easy, done-for-you e-commerce store → Go with Shopify.

If you’re offering services, blogging, or want total creative freedom → WordPress is your best bet.

If you need both (e.g., a website with a blog and an online store) → WordPress + WooCommerce gives you the best of both worlds.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, it’s all about what works best for your business. If you want full control, go WordPress. If you want an easy-to-run online store, Shopify’s got your back. Either way, picking the right platform now will save you headaches down the road.

Still not sure which one’s for you? Let’s chat, I’ll help you figure it out and get you set up with a website that actually works for your business! Contact Us and let’s start building the website that is perfect for you.

So, you need a website. You could go the DIY route (cue the late nights, frustration, and inevitable regret). Or you could hire a faceless, big-name design agency that charges a small fortune and treats you like just another project in their queue. OR you could work with a local web designer who actually gets your business, your audience, and your community.

Spoiler alert: This is the best option.

Here’s why choosing a local web design service is the ultimate power move for small business owners:

1. They Understand Your Market, Because They’re In It!

A local web designer knows your city, your customers, and what makes your business tick. They understand the quirks of your community and can build a site that speaks directly to your audience. A big agency halfway across the country? Not so much.

2. You Get Personalized, One-on-One Service

Working with a local designer means you’re not just another email in an overflowing inbox. You get real conversations, customized solutions, and the kind of support that actually feels human. No automated responses, no cookie-cutter templates, just a site built for you, with you.

3. Faster Communication, Fewer Headaches

Ever tried to track down someone from a massive agency, only to be passed around like a hot potato? Yeah, not fun. With a local web designer, you get direct communication, quicker responses, and someone who actually remembers your name. And maybe even your dog’s name, bonus points!

4. Supporting Local Means Supporting Yourself

When you invest in local businesses, you’re investing in your own community. It’s a full-circle win: you get an amazing website, and your dollars stay local, helping other small businesses thrive. And let’s be real, shopping local just feels good.

5. They’re Invested in Your Success

A local designer isn’t just in it for the paycheck, they genuinely want to see your business succeed. Why? Because your success is their success! Happy clients lead to great word-of-mouth, which keeps their business growing, too. It’s a partnership, not just a transaction.

6. Easy Collaboration & Ongoing Support

Need updates down the road? Want to tweak your site as your business grows? With a local web designer, you have someone you can actually meet with (yes, in person!) to make those changes happen. No more being ghosted by an agency that’s already moved on to their next big client.

The Bottom Line? Go Local.

If you’re a small business owner looking for a website that truly represents your brand, connects with your audience, and doesn’t leave you pulling your hair out, a local web design service is the way to go. You get expertise, personalized service, and the satisfaction of knowing you’re supporting your own community.

If you’ve ever visited a website and seen that little padlock next to the URL, congrats! You’ve witnessed the magic of SSL in action. But if your website doesn’t have that tiny lock, we need to talk. Because in the wild world of the internet, an SSL isn’t just a ‘nice-to-have’, it’s a ‘Google-will-judge-you-if-you-don’t.’

Okay, So What is an SSL?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, which sounds very fancy and techy, but all you really need to know is that it’s the thing that encrypts data traveling between your website and its visitors. In non-nerd terms: it keeps sensitive info safe from sneaky hackers and shady internet gremlins.

Why Do You Need One?

1. Because Google Said So

Google really doesn’t like unsecured websites. In fact, if your site doesn’t have an SSL, visitors might get a big, scary “Not Secure” warning when they land on your page. And nothing says “trust me with your credit card info” like a giant red flag from Google, right?

2. It Protects Your Visitors

An SSL encrypts personal information like passwords, credit card details, and contact forms. Without it, hackers can swoop in and steal data. And let’s be real… nobody wants to be responsible for a cyber heist.

3. It Boosts Your Credibility

A secure website tells visitors, “Hey, I’ve got my act together.” Whether you’re running an e-commerce shop, a service-based business, or a blog, people are way more likely to trust (and buy from) a website that’s properly secured.

4. Better SEO = More Visibility

Google prioritizes secure websites in search rankings. That means having an SSL can help you rank higher and get more eyes on your business. And who doesn’t want a little extra Google love?

How Do You Get One?

Most hosting providers offer SSL certificates, and some even throw them in for free (because they know the internet is a dangerous place). If yours doesn’t, you can easily purchase and install one. Either way, setting it up is a small effort with big benefits.

The Bottom Line

An SSL isn’t just some geeky tech feature, it’s essential for security, trust, and even SEO. So if your site is still cruising around the web without that little padlock, it’s time to fix that. Because an unsecured website in 2025? That’s like leaving your front door wide open with a sign that says, “Come on in!”

Let’s be real, your business isn’t cookie-cutter, so why should your website be? If your website looks like it was copy-pasted from a template that a hundred other businesses are using, it’s not doing you any favors. Your website should be the digital embodiment of your brand, your personality, your vision, your magic. And that means going custom.

Here’s why having a website designed specifically for your business isn’t just a ‘nice-to-have’ but a ‘why-the-heck-wouldn’t-you?’

1. You Stand Out Instead of Blending In

When potential clients land on your website, you have seconds (yes, SECONDS) to make an impression. If your site looks like a stock template with generic fonts and forgettable colors, they might not even remember who you are five minutes later. A custom site captures your brand’s essence, making sure people instantly feel what you’re about.

2. It’s Built for Your Business Goals

Those one-size-fits-all templates? They weren’t built for you. They were built for everyone, which means they truly serve no one perfectly. A custom website is designed around your business’s unique goals, whether that’s booking more clients, selling products, or establishing yourself as the go-to expert in your field. The design and functionality work for you, not against you.

3. Your Website Grows With You

Your business is evolving, as it should be! A custom website can adapt and scale with you, rather than holding you back. Need to add new services? Want a client portal down the road? A well-built, custom site makes these things easy, while a rigid template might leave you wrestling with limitations, or worse, starting over from scratch.

4. Better SEO, Better Visibility

Search engines love a well-structured, fast, and user-friendly website. Custom-built sites are designed with SEO best practices in mind, meaning you have a better chance of showing up in search results. Because let’s be honest, if Google doesn’t know you exist, it’s like you’re in the witness protection program.

5. Your Website Should Work For You, Not the Other Way Around

Ever tried to tweak something on a template and ended up breaking three other things in the process? We’ve all been there. A custom website is built with your workflow in mind, making it easier for you to update content, manage your business, and, most importantly, focus on what you actually love doing.

6. First Impressions Matter, And You Deserve a Good One!

Your website is often the first place people interact with your brand. A polished, strategic, and uniquely you site instantly builds trust and credibility. It tells visitors, I know what I’m doing, I take my business seriously, and I’m exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Ready to Ditch the Generic and Go Custom?

Your brand has something special to offer the world. Your website should reflect that. If you’re ready to stand out, attract the right people, and grow your business with confidence, it’s time to go custom. And hey, I know a gal who can help with that.

Your Business Deserves a Website as Unique as You Are.

View our website services and let’s start building the future of your business!

Photo by Martin Castro on Unsplash
